Pearl Jam recently released the song “Mind Your Manners” as the first single from its upcoming album Lightning Bolt. The song is a hard-edged track with a punk feel, and guitarist Mike McCready said that was exactly what he was going for: “I was just kind of in a mood of like, ‘Let me try to write a punk rock song,’ and the guys kind of backed me up on it and Ed (Vedder, singer)sort of gravitated toward it, and I wanted to kind of channel the feeling of a Dead Kennedys type idea. So yeah, I came up with the riff and the idea, and I threw it into the machine that is our band, and it just came out. And I was very surprised that it became the first single.”
Pearl Jam also released a music video — a rarity for this band — for “Mind Your Manners.” The clip is only the 11th that the band has filmed in its 22-year career.
Lightning Bolt, Pearl Jam’s 10th studio effort, is out on October 15th and follows up 2009’sBackspacer. The album can be pre-ordered at the band’s website and iTunes.
The group kicks off a North American tour on October 11th in Pittsburgh, with the first leg ending the weekend of November 1st at the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans.
The second half of the trek will pick up on November 15th in Dallas, wrapping up on December 6th in Pearl Jam’s hometown of Seattle.
