Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has landed his first acting role in a motion picture with the independent drama Like Sunday, Like Rain. According to Deadline, the movie will star Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester as a struggling musician who becomes the guardian of a 12-year-old musical prodigy. Armstrong has been tapped to play Meester’s boyfriend, with Debra Messing on board as the child’s mother. The film is being written and directed by actor Frank Whaley, who has directed three previous features and is currently seen on Showtime’s Ray Donovan.
Filming on the movie is underway now in New York City.
Armstrong had a small acting role two years ago in the Showtime series Nurse Jackie, where he played a drug addict who overdosed and died in the apartment of the title character, played by Edie Falco.
Armstrong’s previous acting stints have been on the stage, where he performed in the Broadway musical version of Green Day’s American Idiot album.
The singer/guitarist will also be seen in two new documentaries coming out within the next month. The first, Cuatro!, arrives on DVD and iTunes on September 24th and chronicles the making of Green Day’s recent trilogy of albums, Uno!, Dos! and Tre!.
The second film, Broadway Idiot, will open in New York City and on video-on-demand October 11th, expanding October 18th to additional cities. It follows Armstrong as he works on the American IdiotBroadway musical.
Armstrong is currently writing a new rock musical based on Shakespeare‘s Much Ado About Nothing.
