Lorde, the 16-year-old singer from New Zealand who has been topping or climbing the modern rock and pop charts with her first single, “Royals,” told The Sun in a new interview that she doesn’t see herself getting onstage and pulling off something like the Miley Cyrus twerking display anytime soon. Lorde explained, “It’s something I’d never do — I wouldn’t feel confident with my ass out. But if Miley feels comfortable doing it herself then it’s no one’s business to judge.”
Lorde added, “If she wants to appear in her bra and panties then it’s cool. Having been in an institution like Disney all her life, it’s important she has fun. For now, it’s not for me. It’s not natural.”
The singer, who released her debut album Pure Heroine, at the end of September, also said that she doesn’t see herself going through a Britney Spears-style meltdown a few years down the line.
Lorde remarked, “Six months ago, no one knew who I was and now fans chase my car. But I’m never going to change or let fame get the better of me. I’ll never go off the rails like Britney or do an Amy(Winehouse) — because my upbringing was so normal.”
Lorde isn’t allowed to touch alcohol now and said she’s “not sure” she even wants to when she is legally able to.
She added that staying in New Zealand instead of relocating to someplace like Los Angeles keeps her grounded, saying, “Going to crazy places like LA makes me appreciate the lifestyle I have in New Zealand even more . . . ‘When I go home, I’m back being teenage Ella — catching up on school work and gossiping with my friends.”
Lorde will be back in the States next month for two radio festivals on December 3rd in Seattle and December 7th in Oakland.
