You might be surprised to learn how many bands have released Christmas singles for their fan clubs. REM has released a 7″ every Xmas for years, beginning in 1988. Pearl Jam sends members of the official “Ten” club a special Christmas single that always end up online. Tori Amos, the Killers, Collective Soul and even Bad Religion have issued special Christmas songs.
But the rarest of all seems to be a Christmas flexi disc given out on Christmas Eve 1982 at the Hacienda Club in Manchester. That night, 4,400 New Order fans received a special double-sided recording of the band doing something called “Rocking Carol” on the A-side and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” on the B-side. If you ever find one of those, you have a real collectible.
