When U2 was on their Zoo TV tour, Bono used to take a cell phone onstage with him every night. And almost every night during the North American leg of the tour, he would place a call to the White House from the stage.
In October 92, after many phone calls and annoying many White House operators, he decided to make things up to them. U2 dispatched their private jet to Washington where it picked up the operators and flew them down to the U2 gig in Columbia, South Carolina. President George Bush was not amused. He said “I have nothing against U2—but the next time we face a foreign policy crisis, I will work with John Major and Boris Yeltsin. And Bill Clinton can consult with Boy George.”
