This week we’re talking everything Chris Cornell! From Audioslave to Soundgarden Chris is known as one of the pioneers of grunge. He is the frontman for Soundgarden who broke up in 1997 and reformed in 2010 with an album release in 2012 titled “King Animal”, their first L.P. since “Down on the Upside” in 1996. He is also known for being a founder of the band Temple Of A Dog in addition to numerous solo works.
Soundgarden - Been Away Too Long
Soundgarden - Spoonman
This song is about a Seattle street artist who goes by the name Artis the Spoonman. By performing on the streets in the same city Soundgarden was formed he was discovered by the band. Artis played his spoons in the song ‘Spoonman‘, and is credited on the album as (Spoons: Artis The Spoonman). He is also featured in this music video!
Soundgarden – Black Rain
Soundgarden – Eyelids Mouth
Soundgarden formed in 1984 with Chris Cornell originally on drums.
Chris Cornell – Bilie Jean (Michael Jackson Cover)
Chris Cornell wanted to prove to his wife that there was an art to reinventing a song. So he decided to rework ‘Billie Jean‘ by Michael Jackson. Upon release the song became a hit! He reworked the time signature into something much slower. This unlikely cover definitely deserves a listen.
Audioslave – I Am The Highway
Soundgarden – Jesus Christ Pose
The song ‘Jesus Christ Pose‘ is not a religious song. Instead it’s all about Chris Cornell not loving Perry Farrell and the way he exploits the image of Jesus Christ on the cross. Chris believes Perry Farrell comes across as a little pretentious.
Temple of a Dog - Hunger Strike
Audioslave – Original Fire
Soundgarden – Outshined
Soundgarden – Fell On Black Days
Chris Cornell battled addiction, being a part of Audioslave helped him through his issues. Did you know he once didn’t leave his house for an entire year?!? Sounds similar to something Brian Wilson once did.
Soundgarden – Superunknown
Soundgarden – Blow Up The Outside World
Audioslave – Like A Stone
Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell were great friends until his death in 1997 they used to compete to see who could write better songs. Chris Cornell’s song “Wave Goodbye” from his album ‘Euphoria Morning’ pays tribute to Buckley.
Soundgarden – Pretty Noose
Chris Cornell – Sunshower
Audioslave – Cochise
Fun fact: Chris Cornell and Brad Pitt are good friends. They’re both 51 years old and they’re fans of one another’s work. Chris showed up in Toronto for Brad’s 2011 debut of ‘Moneyball‘ at the the Toronto Film Festival. Brad went to a 2009 Chris Cornell solo show where he met up with Courtney Cox, who is Brad Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston‘s best friend. So there you go, the Pitt-Jolies and the Cornells are tight.
Soundgarden – Burden In My Hand
Soundgarden – Rusty Cage
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun
Chris Cornell once misheard a news anchor say “Black Hole Sun” on the radio. Even though he imagined the term he was very intrigued by the image it created in his mind. The song itself is inspired by the title and resulted in one of Soundgarden’s most famous singles.
