Johnny, Jesse, Daniel and Dylan Kongos are the four brothers who make up the band Kongos. They have some interesting family history. Their dad is John Kongos, a South African musician who had a hit single of his own in 1971 called “He’s Gonna Step on You Again,” which, as far as anyone can tell, was the first-ever song in history to feature what we now call a “sample.” Hey, that’s what the Guinness Book of World Records says.
Mr. Kongos’ bright idea was to use a tape loop of some African drumming—something that no one had ever thought of before. That song has been covered a ton of times, including by the Happy Mondays, who remained the song “Step On” and had a big hit with it during the Madchester era. See? Hit songs run in the family.
