We are in section M of the vinyl library today and this is an example of why we need to listen to our history to understand why things are the way they are today. After he finished with the Sex Pistols, manager Malcolm McLaren decided to become a performer himself.
In 1983, he released a debut album called Duck Rock, which features a bunch of different musical styles, including this new thing out of the US called hip hop.
One of the big songs on the album was “Buffalo Gals,” featuring a New York hip hop outfit called the World’s Famous Supreme Team. It became an unlikely hit and as a result introduced the elements of hip hop and scratching to a worldwide audience. This was a very important record.
