Last week we held a contest to “Win Tickets to see Sam Roberts at Massey Hall on Valentines”. We asked entrants to submit who they wanted to bring to the show and why in their entry. We were blown away by the amazing responses but one in particular stood out from the pack to us.
Caley Mouland wrote this in his entry:
“Ok, this is nuts but if I win I’ll put everything on the line and propose to my long time girlfriend at the concert. Ring is in hand.
I’m a pilot in the Air Force and she waited for me for two years while I was gone on training out west and stuck by me, fantastic girl. We are concert junkies so rocking out and surprising her would be the ideal time.
We also lived in Montreal together for several years so Sam Roberts would definitely set the mood.
Mel, choose me because it is romantic and will completely surprise her.
Fred, because I’ll be put on the spot and will need big cohones to follow through. Save me from a lame proposal!”
And with that entry, a new chapter in the life of Caley and Marie began. Read their story of the night below and check out the video of the proposal right there with Sam Roberts Band!
Here’s What Happened that Evening:
Caley: When I won the contest I knew it was going to be a great night and a big surprise to her as we love the band and lived together for several years in Montreal. I did tell her that we were going to see Sam Roberts for valentines on Friday and she was thrilled. When I told her we had a car to pick us up on Saturday, she started asking questions so I told her about winning the contest but not how I won it and did not tell her about backstage access.
Marie: He told me how he wrote to both radio hosts – who he grew to know over the last 2 years of driving to work and back so he knew what to write that would be appealing to both DJ’s (Fred and Mel). He wrote them a story of how we met, the periods of time where I waited for him while he was away on flight training, our love for Rock’n Roll music and our years together.
We took off to Smith & Brothers’ Steakhouse where we enjoyed one of the best steaks I’ve had in awhile. The diner was so great, Caley and I were so content. I even said to him at one point “You know, I really like you. We’re so much alike and I have so much fun with you, I am so grateful”
The limo picked us up at the restaurant to bring us back to Massey Hall where we met with Denton, the band manager who brought us backstage. It was so nice to see Montreal musicians and talk about friend we had in common (one of them being Sam’s brother Dan who we use to go to the dog park with in Montreal) We enjoyed Sam Robert Craft beer and engaged in fun conversation with the group.
Caley: I told the tour manager what I was planning to do and after talking to the band for a while and sharing a beer with the guys, slipped in that I was going to propose. She was just chatting with Sam when I approached her and popped the question.
Marie: Caley kept talking then took a knee. He reached in his pocket and opened up a box with a beautiful one of a kind raw diamond ring and asked me to marry him. I paused with my left hand on my face, looked around again still in complete shock. I never saw this coming. I told him I loved him and he asked if that was a yes? Sam was almost breathing over my shoulder waiting with anticipation for me to just say yes already.
I nodded – yes.
Caley: The band cheered, we celebrated and they gave us bands to access to the after party with them with their family / friends.
What an experience and a story to tell for a long time…
Love and Rock’n Roll.
