One of the things that set the Ramones apart from every other punk band in the middle 70s was their uniform. Everyone wore leather jackets, t-shirts and tore jeans. Just about every fan knows that. But did you know that they also had standard footwear, too? By 1978, it was a rule that all members had to wear Converse All Stars. Shoes from Nike and Adidas were forbidden, as were any other form of rock star shoe like ones with platforms.
Converse All Stars were seen as the ultimate in non-elitist sneaker. Marky and Dee Dee always wore red Converse so that they stuck out more. And this is the way it always was–until Joey Ramone showed up wearing some Reeboks one day in the late 80s. That caused… problems, but they got over it.
