At one point, this was one of the most toxic records in my collection. Negativland is an experimental band out of California that got very, very deep into creating samples and sound collages, often—okay, almost always—showing a complete disregard for copyright. Clear samples? Pish. That attitude let to an issue with U2 over 1991 EP entitled U2. Negativland said the EP was named after the Cold War spy plane. The band U2 disagreed, pointing to the fact that Negativland covered “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” on the record. Well, not covered but just kind of…appropriated in its entirety. Also pissed off was DJ Casey Kasem who was sampled without his knowledge or approval. The record had to be withdrawn. And lawyers made a lot of money.
