A decade ago, there were 63 strip clubs in Toronto. Today, there are 14, and that number keeps going down.
Why? There are a few reasons.
Lack of demand – Generation Y has different taste. They’re more interested in digital-based entertainment and re-world games like archery tag and e-sports. Tim Lambrinos, the director of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada, says that this is more appealing to them than “objectifying women and men around a dance pole”.
People are also resorting to other, more private services that satisfies their sexual drive, rather than public entertainment. This includes apps, x-rated massage parlours, sex and escort services, and new cuddling services.
Strip clubs are selling their land to condo builders.. and since Toronto doesn’t allow the opening of new strip clubs, it’s likely the number will continue to go down.
To accommodate this generation, strip clubs are planning to incorporate more digital aspects.
I had some Edge listeners call in, and all the guys said they don’t go to strip clubs. They’d rather go do something else, like mini putting and gaming. The only girl who called in said she goes to strip clubs with her guy friends about twice a year. Looks like the ladies might be keeping the industry alive! Tim Lambrinos even said it himself: “it’s almost as if the young women are the ones bringing them out to the clubs now.”
