Bob Marley remains one of the most universally popular artists in the history of all music. So why did he die in 1981 at age 36? He developed something called acral lentiginous melanoma. This is a form of cancer of the skin pigment on the hands and feet. Bob contracted in his big toe of his right foot after injuring it playing soccer. Whether the injury caused the cancer or just activated it, no one knows. Because of its rarity, this type of cancer is often not spotted until it’s too late. In Bob’s case, he didn’t know anything extra was wrong until his toenail fell off. Because his Rastafarian beliefs wouldn’t allow amputation, the cancer eventually spread to his brain and liver. Neither conventional treatments or alternative treatments worked and within eight months of his diagnosis, he was dead.
