Somewhere out in the desert east of Los Angeles is the spot where U2 posed for Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn in front of an old wizened tree—a Joshua tree, as they’re known. U2 tried to keep the location of the tree a secret because they knew that fans would descend upon the place and hack it up for souvenirs. That location remained a secret until the Internet and Google Maps came along.
But even by the time this technology came along, the tree had died and fallen over sometime in 2000 as the result of natural causes. However, people still make pilgrimages to this spot in the desert which has been marked and commemorated by U2 fans who want to preserve the place. Unfortunately, there are some idiots on this planet. Sometime in February, a jerk found the remains of the tree and hacked off a one-inch-thick branch as a souvenir. Some people have no respect.
