About five years ago, I ran across this band from Detroit that sounded fresh and angry and full of energy. VERY contemporary. Then I discovered that Death had actually been around from 1971 through to about 1976. The band consisted of three black dudes from Detroit who were making punk-like music before there was such a thing as punk. But the three Hackney brothers—Bobby, David and Dannis—were just too far ahead of their time and didn’t get the credit they deserved. Finally, in 2009, the Drag City re-released their 70s demos and—well, we finally got to hear how awesome Death was.
