Royal Blood makes an awful lot of noise for a band with just two guys. There’s singer and bassist Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher, who got together in Brighton, England, in early 2013. They’ve known each other for years but tended to play in separate bands. Kerr was in a band called Hunting the Minotaur that seemed to be on the verge of something, but when it didn’t pan out, he asked Thatcher if he’d like to jump on the two-piece band bandwagon. So they did.
Their big break came when Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys wore a Royal Blood t-shirt during their headline slot at Glastonbury in the summer of 2013. That was enough support for record companies to come sniffing and for Royal Blood to get their first exposure on British radio. Now they’re blowing up thanks to an endorsement from another guy: Dave Grohl, who has invited the band to tour with the Foo Fighters. It’ll be interesting to see where Royal Blood can take things.
