German duo Milky Chance (plus live addition, Antonio) played not one, but two sold out shows at Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre this long weekend. Despite the ridiculous cold and snowy weather, Canadian fans still came out and filled the entire length of the venue!
Their opener, James Hersey, kicked off the show at nine. Similar to Milky Chance, the Austrian performer speaks, sings and performs in English – so Canadians you have no excuse not to check him out. We particularly enjoyed his single ‘Juliet’. Hersey and band bring a vibrant energy on stage that is so contagious you can’t help but move and sing along.
Milky Chance greeted the crowd a little after ten. Their set was beautiful with totem-like poles that lit up behind them. A step up from their light bulbs from last year. What we love about Milky Chance is that you don’t have to know their songs to enjoy their show. Their music is so upbeat and catchy that the moment you hear it you’ll want to get up and dance.
However, if you are familiar with their songs you would have particularly enjoyed ‘Flashed Junk Mind’ because it’s wicked fun live. The second track from their album Sadnecessary starts off slow and smooth and comes alive during the chorus – with help from the totem poles that light up in tune to the beat for killer aesthetics. We also enjoyed hits like ‘Stolen Dance’, ‘Fairytale’ and not so popular but just as worthy ‘Feathery’.
Milky Chance is a group that sounds even better live than in the studio. We guarantee that if you haven’t seen these guys live, you’ve been missing out on the full Milky Chance experience.
