There are a lot of similarities between the melodic styles of today’s indie scene and the kind of music that made alt-rock radio back in the 1980s. To illustrate my point, I give you Icehouse, an Australian band who worked the same circuit as INXS as far back as 1977. Give these guys credit for introducing new keyboards into Australian music, including the Linn Drum electronic drum and the Fairlight CMI, the world’s first sampling keyboard. Their biggest hit outside the country was a 1987 album entitled Man of Colours, which made it to #43 in America. This was one of the big alt-rock radio hits from the record.
