We’ve got sooo much music coming across our paths every day, we wanted to share the best of it with you via The Drop! An hour of new music every Sunday at 8pm.
This week was a big one for fans of METRIC as well as Tokyo Police Club, we’re going to tackle some new bands that you should have on your radar and more from your current favourites.
1. MILKY CHANCE – Flash Junked Mind
Okay, maybe not so new anymore but you deserve a new tune from this German duo after “Stolen Dance” took over the internet…and then the planet. Bring your party pants to Edgefest 1, July 23rd at TD Echo Beach, as they headline a stellar line up of talent.
2. PASSION PIT – Until We Can’t (Let’s Go)
Passion Pit are back! If you liked their first offering, “Lifted Up (1985)” you’re going to love”Until We Can’t (Let’s Go)”. Both off their new album Kindred which was released last month, and hopefully, you saw the whole thing live at the Danforth Music Hall a few weeks back. That was fun, ammiright?
3. PANIC IS PERFECT – Go Go Go
We discovered these guys at SXSW, crammed into a tiny corner of a bar. They were recommended to us by a professional French horn player who goes by the name of Zach Wild, true story. Only half the band fit on the small stage, they were 20 minutes late going on and soundcheck was going horribly wrong. Then they started…and blew our minds. Definitely keep an eye on this band in the months to come. If you like Grouplove and Vampire Weekend, you will love these San Francisco chaps.
4. SON LUX – Change Is Everything
When’s the last time the Wall Street Journal did an article on a band? Not top of pile for music discovery sources, however, they hit the nail on the head with this one. Ryan Lott, founder of SON LUX, went from writing commercial jingles to power rock/electronica with a tip of the hat to David Bowie (IMHO). The stop-motion animation music vid took so long to create, it would pretty much be rude for you not to watch it.
5. COEUR DE PIRATE – Carry On
Despite not recognizing the name, indie pop Montreal native Coeur De Pirate probably isn’t a stranger to you– she was in a band with Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash and she has quite the following in Quebec and France. Now she’s writing in English, A.K.A. getting ready for world domination.
6. BOOTS – I Run Roulette
Jordan Asher (BOOTS) climbed to the top of the music mountain after contributing four original songs and producing 85% of Beyonce’s 2013 record (the one they dropped close to Christmas without any warning). He’s also a rapper, singer, songwriter, film director and one hell of a performer. We’ve heard a rumor that he is going to team up with some A list musicians down the road…ones you should be very excited about. P.S. Heard of that movie 50 Shades Of Grey? Ya. He scored the soundtrack. NBD.
7. LOWELL – I Love You, Money
If you were at the Spring Sessions: Toronto Festival Of Beer back in April on the Friday night, you were crushing Tiny Tom Donuts and chugging mini pints to this wolf of a gal. Originally born in Calgary, Lowell recently re-located to Toronto and I’m pretty sure she wants to do yoga with you.
8. CATFISH & THE BOTTLEMEN – Cocoon
There’s something about this band that just makes you want to jump up and down and scream at their live shows. They were here playing the Garrison this past March and we went to find them again at SXSW in Austin a week later. Couldn’t get enough. They work with the same producer as Kasabian, Adele, and Arctic Monkeys, so you know these big-haired Welsh kids mean business.
9. DAVE MONKS – Gasoline
Tokyo Police Club front man Dave Monks is going solo with this new track. His new E.P. All Signs Point to Yes will be released on June 16.
10. BRAND NEW – Mene
Remember that song “Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades”? Yes, it’s been a while. Brand New has been releasing new tracks over the past month and this is the first release since their album Daisy in 2009. Love how this tune just punches in for two solid minutes and leaves you wanting more. WHERE IS THE REPEAT BUTTON?
12. METRIC – The Shade (I Want It All)
The biggest release of the week! We can thank Imagine Dragons for the new Metric single- they weren’t ready to go back to “work” and release their sixth studio album until Imagine Dragons asked them to go on tour with them in 2015! That’s kind of a big deal. So nice to watch this band evolve and grow with each release, huge props to this gang and much love.
