A little pop, a little crackle, a little rock and a splash of electronic is what you can expect from tonight’s show. And I can guarantee there are songs on this list that will be massive hits in a few weeks or months from now. Let’s get started…
1. RIA MAE – Clothes Off
This Halifax singer-songwriter had about $14 in her bank account when her song was picked up by a local Halifax radio station. Ten days later, she got a call from major label and her story is just about to begin. The power of local radio stations!! Mae’s sound is similar to Milky Chance in the way they build laptop beats on top of acoustic songs…however, her tunes take the sexy path versus the “let’s get super stoned and party” route.
2. GEORGE EZRA – Blame It On Me
Still hard to believe this kid is only 21 years gold (that wasn’t a typ0). What an incredible voice! This is the follow-up single to “Budapest”.
3. IVAN & ALYOSHA – All This Wandering Around
Julisa (Edge music department genius) brought this band in after seeing them open for Hey Rosetta! late last year and then again last week for their headlining show at the Silver Dollar. This introspective folk-pop indie rock band from Seattle just released their sophomore record, It’s All Just Pretend, and this song is about the constant search for something bigger than yourself. To quote the band themselves, they said “…seems like every time I think I’ve got it figured out, something happens that shows me how much I don’t have it figured out, and how much more I need to grow, learn, and change. But hopefully the wandering brings us all full circle, back to the people and the things that we love.”
4. ODESZA – Say My Name (ft. Zyra)
Back to back Seattle bands! What’s with that place? Okay, so I’ve been debating whether to play this song on our “new music” show for a month now… the record didn’t come out this week or even this year, in fact it’s been out for nine months but SCREW IT – more people need to hear this song and all we care about it good tunes, right? If you know it, you love it, if you don’t know it, you’re welcome!! Now let us indulge in some serious electronic awesomeness.
5. YUKON BLONDE – I Wanna Be Your Man
Hot damn. The first single “Saturday Night” off their upcoming album, On Blonde, defined a modern 80s sound that matched the Flock Of Seagulls hair…but this tune takes it back another decade into the psych 70s! With the fuzzy riffs of Tame Impala and the vocal stylings of The Black Keys, Vancouver’s Yukon Blonde are promising a dynamic follow-up record to their 2012 release, Tiger Talk. Bring it on, June.
6. BULLY – Trying
It doesn’t get more honest than this– Bully has no qualms exposing those thoughts we’d all rather keep to ourselves: “I question everything, my focus, my figure, my sexuality…” because how else are you going to deal with it if you don’t lay ’em all out on the table? This Nashville band was a hot topic at SXSW 2015 as they will be for the rest of the year while they tour with fellow 90s-inspired band, Best Coast (who we played last week!).
7. JOEL PLASKETT – Credits Roll
How many awards have you won in your life? Joel Plaskett has won the East Coast Music Awards – get this – twenty-three times. No joke. Not to mention a JUNO Award in 2010…NBD. Hey, participation ribbons are cool, too, Joel just doesn’t know what those are. His new record, The Park Avenue Sobriety Test, came out this past March, and if you dig Wintersleep and Matt Mays, add this to your collection and it’s complete.
8. OF MONSTERS AND MEN – Hunger
Yes, Of Monsters and Men released another song this week and I can’t get enough.
9. ALABAMA SHAKES – Gimme All Your Love
I can tell you right now that Alabama Shakes Sound And Colour will definitely be top of pile on the imminent Best of 2015 lists. Since they’re in town next weekend for Field Trip, I thought I’d dig up another gem off the record to get you amped. This is one of the most soulful and powerful songs I’ve hear in a long, long time. This tune definitely wears its heart on its sleeve.
10. FFS – Piss Off
FFS is a supergroup collaboration with Franz Ferdinand and Sparks (FFS=Franz Ferdinand and Sparks). They’ve put out for songs since their announcement of the project, “Jonny Delusional”, “Collaborations Don’t Work”, “Piss Off” and this week, they released “Call Girl”. The record comes out June 9th and here’s a taste of its sound…
11. AWOLNATION – I Am
One of the most dynamic and exciting bands to come out this millennium. AWOLNATION makes you drop all sonic expectations and just be present while listening to their music and that’s what I love about them. Most of their songs are organized chaos but they always have one straight forward, feel-good-hit-of-the-summer track and this is it. They will be in town playing Sound Academy on June 22 and hopefully in studio here at Sugar Beach for something special. Stay tuned for details.
In case you’re wondering where you heard this … it’s featured in the new World Of Red Bull campaign!
12. HAWKSLEY WORKMAN – Make Up Your Mind Tonight
After over 15 years in the biz, you still never know what you’re gonna get with Hawksley. His new record, Old Cheetah, comes out this Tuesday and features Steve Bays (Mounties, Hot Hot Heat) on piano, keyboard and banjo.
