In a feat reminiscent of Nadia Comaneci’s perfect 10s in gymnastics at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Vance Joy picked up the Grand Prize in the 2014 International Songwriting Competition. This contest is just like it sounds: an international search for great songwriting. For the first time in the 14 years of the competition, the winner received a perfect score from each judge.
Okay, so who was judging? Sarah McLachlan, one of the guys from Run-DMC, Bastille, the guys in Keane, Avicii, jazz guitarist Pat Metheny as well as presidents and CEOs from Warner Brothers, Atlantic Records, Elektra Records, Virgin Records and EMI. In other words, people who should know a thing or two about songwriting. Vance received $25,000 in cash and $45,000 in merch and services. Oh, and the song was “Riptide,” in case you were wondering.
