Whether you’re chilling on the dock at the cottage or you’ve managed to escape the Canadian summer for a more tropical one, there’s no denying that a great playlist can make any summer day infinitely better. Here are seven songs of summers past that you’ll want to add to that epic summer playlist.
Summer of ’69 – Bryan Adams
Summer of ’69 is a timeless classic. It hit the charts in June of 1985 and since then has been a staple of summer listening. Easy to hum or sing along to, and reminiscent of the “good ole days”, this song is a must on a beach playlist.
Island in the Sun – Weezer
One of the most popular Weezer hits internationally, Island in the Sun is such an easy song to listen to and perfectly encompasses what summer should be. While it may have been overplayed at the time of its release in 2001, it’s one of those songs that you can throw into a playlist like this one and be pleased when it comes on.
Boys of Summer – Don Henley/The Ataris
Depending on which one you heard first and which generation you come from, both the Don Henley original and The Ataris version of Boys of Summer will no doubt conjure visions of summers past. Released by Henley in 1984, it’s since been performed live by The Eagles after Henley reunited with them.
Steal My Sunshine – Len
If you grew up in the nineties, chances are you heard Len’s Steal My Sunshine on repeat. Even if you didn’t, you’ve got to admit, this song is catchy. Despite the video being a little confusing (wait, they’re sister and brother?), the song is easy to sing along with while relaxing on a beach.
Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
If you’ve been living under a rock your whole life, then you might not recognize this one. Brown Eyed Girl came out in 1967 and since then has been covered an insane amount of times and featured in tons of movies. While this one can get tiresome after its 3rd play in one weekend, it’s still an amazing summer song for any playlist.
Black Betty – Ram Jam
the original author is not really known, and earlier versions of the song exist, Ram Jam’s version is probably the most well-known and popular, and perfect to listen to on your way to the cottage with the windows down.
Semi-Charmed Life – Third Eye Blind
This upbeat and summery song was released in 1997 by American band Third Eye Blind. And while most people couldn’t sing along to the lyrics if they tried (even after hearing it a thousand times over the years), it’s hard to resist do-do-do-ing along with this song.
Absolutely (Story of a Girl) – Nine Days
One of the tops hits of 2000, the song mostly known as Story of a Girl was released by American band Nine Days. One of those tunes that you remember the lyrics to after all these years, this song will bring you back to early millennium summers when things were a little more simple (iPhone? What’s that?)
Get Lucky – Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams
This catchy 2013 funk/disco song was an instant hit when it was released, and for good reason. Mixing old school sound, smooth vocals, plucky instrumentals and one hell of a beat, Get Lucky is perfect on any summer soundtrack.
Danza Kudoro – Don Omar ft. Lucenzo
Okay, so I’ve got to admit, this one isn’t a typical summer anthem, but it’s my absolute favourite summer song. This Spanish/Portugese song from Don Omar was released in 2010 and is a popular play at most all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. Don’t worry about not understanding the lyrics if you can’t speak Spanish, the beat is good enough to keep you bobbing your head along while you sip a beer on the dock.
