Let’s face it, we all have bad days. Sometimes, despite how much we’ve prepared and practiced, things just don’t go according to plan. Life’s always there to throw a curve ball… and sometimes we even lose our temper (it happens!). Some of my favourite bands are no stranger to this. But their bad days happened on stage, in front of thousands of fans. Here are some of the best on stage hissy fits.
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Sure, we all fight with our friends. But at least it’s usually done in private and not on national television. Back in 1992 during the band’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik era, the Red Hot Chili Peppers rose to super stardom. The band was preforming live on Saturday Night Live. Apparently, John Frusciante was angry with Anthony Kiedis for kicking him in the back of the knee earlier in the show. To retaliate, during “Under the Bridge” Frusciante played a heavily distorted guitar and simply screamed his vocals into the mic. As one of my favourite songs, it’s actually really painful to listen to; you can tell Kiedis is desperately trying to keep up. Frusciante left the band shortly after this performance (until he came back…and left again). He reported had trouble coping with the newfound fame and was struggling with a drug problem.
The year was 1989 – just as Nirvana was starting to come together. The band was preforming in New York City when a drunken fan wanders on stage. The fan somehow snatches a mic and starts signing/screaming along. Kurt Cobain and guitarist Jason Everman give him a minute before starting a full on brawl. Watching the performance, I’m not sure if it’s because I expect what’s coming – but I get the vibe that this is a hostile environment. I mean, this would never fly with security today… But damn, that’s one lucky fan. He’s got the ultimate party story for years to come. How many people can actually say they got their scars from an on stage brawl with Kurt Cobain?
3. Foo Fighters
Although the Nirvana brawl was before Dave Grohl joined the band, he’s definitely tried his hand at on stage crime stopping. At the 2011 iTunes Festival in London, the Foo Fighters were doing their thing, rocking out to the song “Walk”. Everything seems pretty regular, until suddenly Dave Grohl demands they stop playing. He had apparently noticed a fan fighting in the crowd. He proceeds to yell profanities at the fan and kicks him out of the venue. Unsure how to react fans cheer along, likely afraid Grohl may kick them out too (they still hadn’t even played Best of You!).
Now most recently, I’m sure we all remember hearing about Greenday’s set at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas in 2012. Billie Joe Armstrong absolutely looses his mind when the band is told they have 1 minute left to play. He immediately directs the band to stop playing. He goes on an incoherent rant about deserving more than a minute to play, and smashes his guitar. It makes you cringe just watching him spiral out of control. Later that week, Armstrong was checked into rehab for substance abuse.
So there you have it, our favourite artists are human too! We all have our moments, so maybe your day wasn’t so bad after all?
