Sometimes amazing artists fall through the cracks. They get lost in the demos and radio play cycle, and some don’t get picked up by a good label, and some stay indie. Throughout all of this, CFNY-FM has done an amazing job of playing only the best in Ontario Alternative Rock over the last few decades. While these artists are fantastic and I am sure would have found success regardless, The Edge definitely was on the first wave of stations to show these artists support.
6. JJ & The Pillars
For those of you who don’t know they won The Next Big Thing, launching them to receive airplay from rock stations all over Ontario. Their legacy hasn’t even begun, and we are excited to see what amazing things they accomplish. CASBY Count – None… yet
5. Bedouin Soundclash
Before Bedouin Soundclash took Canada by storm with their second album Sounding A Mosaic, originally, the only station to play their single “When The Night Feels My Song” was 102.1 The Edge. It wasn’t until after it reached #1 on Edge charts that other stations caught on to the fantastic Alt Rock/Ska/Reggae mix that is Bedouin Soundclash. CASBY Count – 1
Coming from Hamilton Ontario, this AltRock band stands out for its melodic sound. From songs like “Oh, the Boss is Coming!” and “John Lennon” which had some chart success, all the way to “Leather Jacket” which hit #1 on the Canadian Alt charts, Arkells have been a mainstay in radio play for The Edge for almost a decade. CASBY Count – 2
For almost 3 albums, one of the only stations to play USS was The Edge. What is now possibly one of the biggest fan favourite bands around, with fans proving their loyalty after a successful funding campaign for their most recent album, USS still gets a lot of airplay on The Edge, because their Alt-Elctronic-Rock mix is exactly what listeners crave! CASBY Count – 3
2. Billy Talent
Many readers might not know this but frontman Ben Kowalewicz worked for CFNY for a few years. Once they recorded their first album, I’m sure Ben was excited and proud to hear his music on the station he worked for. If you live in Canada, you’ve definitely heard of and rocked out to Billy Talent. CASBY Count – 4
1. Alexisonfire / City & Colour
This indie hard rock band who stuck to their guns on their sound found a nice home on The Edge. Now you can’t listen to any station without eventually hearing some City & Colour, Dallas Green’s offshoot band. With Wade now kicking butt in the late night shift, Alexisonfire/City & Colour and The Edge have had a very successful symbiotic relationship. CASBY Count – AoF (4) C&C (6) Total (10)
