One of my all-time favourite performers is Elvis Costello. In fact, if it wasn’t for the epiphany I experienced when I saw him and the Attractions play the Playhouse Theatre in 1978, I wouldn’t be doing this for a living. He made that much of an impact on me.
Elvis does has a memoir coming out this fall, but if you can’t wait until then, there’s a quick read by Toronto writer Richard Crouse called Elvis Is King: Costello’s My Aim is True which delves into the creation of Elvis’ first album back in 1977. One of the best parts deals with the backing band that was hired to make the record. A chunk of that group later went on to form another band called—wait for it—Huey Lewis and the News. Elvis is King: Costello’s My Aim is True is available now through ECW press.
