Prison breaks are shaping up to be the trend of the summer. This one makes those guys from upstate New York look like amateurs. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the biggest drug lord in the world has escaped from maximum security prison in Mexico just a year after his capture. An elaborate set of tunnels were found under the prison and had been fitted with lighting and ventilation. This supposedly all happened without any detection from officials. Many, however, find this skeptical with Mexico’s history of corruption and El Chapo`s power within the country. He was on Forbes list of Most Powerful People In The World one time ranking as high as 41st.
With a net worth of more than $1 billion and an intense history of violence, it is easy to speculate some sort of bribery or threat was involved in the escape. Guzman has escaped from prison before in 2001 where he was on the run for over a decade. He has been responsible for around 70,000 murders and personally claims to have committed 2,000-3,000. Despite efforts from Mexican law enforcement road checkpoints and airport, lockdowns were not enough to find El Chapo as photos surfaced of him drinking a beer while flying on a plane. Donald Trump didn`t shy away from letting the world know what he thought about the escape on his twitter account. He did shy away however after receiving death threats from Guzman’s son.
Unlike those guys from New York, I think it’s pretty likely that it will be a very long time before authorities catch up to Joaquin Èl Chapo`Guzman.
