This show is gonna be a bit different tonight, there are some covers, some remixes and then there are some artists and songs on here I can’t find any info on…but that’s when it’s most exciting, right? JJ of JJ & The Pillars is on his way over here to chat about a track I had to beg him to let us play. Who makes people beg them to play their music? Derp.
1. FRANK TURNER – Mittens
First things first, we must celebrate the release of a great album…Frank Turner’s new record Positive Songs For Negative People was released a couple days ago and this guy has a knack for getting your feelings in the palm of his hands. Effortlessly. Before you know it, his songs are about you and you’re having an emotional breakdown about your ex. Ugh, thanks Frank. This tune has yet another legendary lyric “we used to fit like mittens but never like gloves”.
2. HALF MOON RUN – Trust
The Montreal quartet, Half Moon Run, are getting set to release their second record, Sun Leads Me On, which you can find from wherever you get your music on October 23rd. Since putting out their first record, they have found themselves on stage opening for Of Monsters And Men, Metric, City And Colour, Mumford & Sons…just to name-drop a few bands. The band released an internet track a couple days ago called “Trust” – a track that suggests they’ve done some electronic experimenting on this new record. The official single should be released later this month but in the meantime, here’s a taste of what’s to come.
3. CITY AND COLOUR – Wasted Love
Hot off the heels of a #1 record with Alecia Moore (P!nk) and their project You+Me, Dallas Green is back with a new and confident lust for exploring the depths of his authenticity. The new record If I Should Go Before You comes out October 9th and so far we’ve heard his epic, 9-minute mood marathon song “Woman” – a hazy, dark, ambient masterpiece about never-ending love, confession, and the end of the world. This week, we got “Wasted Love”, the official foot-tapping single gives us the other end of the spectrum and we can’t wait to hear what falls in between come October 9th.
4. TAME IMPALA – ‘Cause I’m A Man (HAIM Remix)
HAIM released a remix of Tame Impala’s saucy new single and whether you know the original or not, the songwriting sexiness that will transcend as the HAIM sisters slowed it down and added their own vocals.
5. ALLAN RAYMAN – 27
Remember at the start of the show there will be some tracks on here I know nothing about? This is one of them. A friend sent this to me late this afternoon and I had to rearrange my show for it, it was that good. Kind of exciting, right? I thought it was rad but more importantly, this tune is getting some serious traction on Spotify so it’s not just me, it’s you. #deflection
6. SILVERSUN PICKUPS – Nightlight
Everyone has that band – you know every single word to every single song on every single album. You even know what track number the song falls on each record. How do you feel when your favourite band releases new music? There’s obviously some excitement, duh. But there’s a level of fear. What if it sucks? That would be the worst. But when it doesn’t suck? Oh man. This is what I was put on this planet for – to listen to Silversun Pickups music. The new record, Better Nature, drops September 25th. I’m excited and scared.
7. K.I.D – Drunk Enough To Love Me
Bobby and Kara of K.I.D (Kids In Despair) came by the station for a visit earlier this week to bring us breakfast. Just like their music, it wasn’t anything anyone else would bring you for breakfast – cupcakes and whiskey. You can catch this Toronto garage-pop two-piece at Edgefest on August 15th at TD Echo Beach and I promise you they are going to impress your pants off. Fresh off signing a world-wide record deal, they are heading to the UK this fall to start recording their debut record. For now, you can check out their 6-song-strong EP, Kids In Despair, on cassette (for real), vinyl, CD, or however you get your music.
8. OH WONDER – Lose It
This electronic duo based out of London, UK are experimenting new ways to release music and growing fans by putting out one song per month for an entire year. They are eleven months/tracks in and the plan seems to be working – with over 11 million streams on Soundcloud and Spotify, the buzz around their upcoming record release is pretty impressive. Anthony and Josephine are both classically trained multi-instrumentalists and write, mix, and produce their own tracks tougher in their home studio.
9. ELLE KING – Under The Influence
Possibly one of the biggest breakthrough artists of 2015?? This is the second single from the sassy Elle King, off her record Love Stuff.
10. BR/DGES – What Are You Waiting For
Lead singer of Moneen, Kenny Bridges, has released a two-song EP called Love And Hate. The heartfelt “What Are You Waiting For” is carried by an earnest and sparse strum of an acoustic guitar until the last thirty seconds of the song when shit gets real. Lovin’ this. It’s exclusively streaming on the web right now, so click here to listen. More music from Dine Alone Records below.
11. JJ & THE PILLARS – Wicked Game
I found this cover a few months ago while surfing YouTube and was blown away. The song was originally written and performed by the 90s sex-bot Chris Isaak… remember that black and white video him frolicking around with a model on a beach? (I wanted to be her so baldy) Anyway. Whether you know the original or not, this cover by JJ Thompson of JJ & The Pillars is riddled with such passion that will make your hair stand on end. It took months of pestering him to let me to play this so I hope the hard work pays off and you fall in love with it, too. JJ’s version and Chris Isaak’s original below!
The original (cooooool):
12. FIDLAR – West Coast
A band that names themselves the acronym for “Fuck It Dog, Life’s A Risk” is gonna be fun. The garage punks from Los Angeles just released their second record, Too.
