The Neighbourhood just surprised fans with the release of their new song ‘R.I.P. 2 My Youth’, off their sophomore album Wiped Out!, out on October 30th.
What’s it about? “I feel like it could really go for all of us as far as what has happened in our life in the past couple years and the awesome opportunities we’ve been able to have. I think kind of reflecting back on it – growing up per se, whether you want to or not. Sometimes your youth – some people have it taken away from them earlier and some people get to wait a little longer before you have to grow up, but either way the world kind of hits you.” – Jesse Rutherford, lead singer
In December 2014, they released #icanteven, off their mixtape #000000 & #FFFFFF. The song is majorly hip hop inspired, but still true to their rock roots, with Rutherford and French Montana rapping. Rutherford explained that, to him, “rapping is just rhythmic vocals […] the rhythm of hip-hop is really what got me into it. It’s not just words being said; it’s about how the words are said” :
Who is The Neighbourhood?
The Neighbourhood mysteriously entered the music scene in 2012 with the release of their single “Female Robbery”. What they didn’t release was photos, biographical information, background info, and so on.. leaving people to slowly, overtime, put the pieces together.. and why is that? Perhaps it reflects the mystery and darkness in their music, and that they put the music first.
We now know that The Neighbourhood is made up of 5 friends, fronted by Jesse Rutherford. They’re from California. Their sound is unlike others: a flawless blend of hip hop and rock. Their image, musically and visually, is also distinct – shadowy and mysterious, everything in “black and white”, as the band says. Jesse explained the unique style in this way: “I always have a strong vision before I go into anything. I don’t know how to make music any other way. It was all in my head, and that vision for the music was to make hip-hop beats with guitars and I was going to sing and rap over them. We wanted to do that hip-hop aesthetic on an indie platform.”
The Neighbourhood is behind the massive hit “Sweater Weather”, off their debut Album I Love You. Check out their live Sugar Beach Session from 2 years ago:
Be sure to check them out while on tour – they’ll be performing in Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall on October 9th. You may catch them playing another of their classic songs, like “A Little Death”, off their 2012 EP Thank You.
