Have you ever walked into building that was scattered with 16 year-olds in weird red eye make-up?
Well okay, that sounds like high school and it did bring me back to my high school days when My Chemical Romance was a thing but this time it was a Twenty One Pilots show. Though to be fair the show turned to be pretty fantastic, despite the target audience.
Twenty One Pilots is a band often known for being the unknown misfits, rocking the ski masks (for the most part) and having no identity, not even their sound guys have identities… We are them and they are us. They are passionate musicians and they have passionate fans. I have never seen fans as young as them, more determined and more dedicated than the ‘Skeleton Clique’ (that’s what their fan base is called).
The band steered a bit away from the older stuff and stayed more on the newest album, Blurryface, opening the show up with ‘Stressed Out’, as the crowd sang along “My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think”. If there was someone watching who did not care, I can almost promise, by the end of the night they had them sold.
The stage presence was memorable and the crowd were always engaged through every single song. At one point, drummer Josh Dun played the drums, on top of the crowd, while they help him up on his platform, something I’ve never seen done before.
They continued to bring their awesome stage presence with songs like “Heavydirtysoul” “Ride” “Fairly Local” “Tear in My Heart” plus a whole slew of songs off their newest album. Before vanishing into the dark, they ended the night on the song that started it all for them at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards ‘Car Radio’.
Lead singer Tyler Joseph abruptly ended the song on the lyrics ‘…and now I just sit in silence’, as he made his way through the dark, dimmed Sound Academy, only to reappear standing on a ledge in the middle of the crowd like some Houdini trick, to close out the show, as the confetti fell.
I learned that night that Twenty One Pilots are to be taken serious. Fantastic energy, crazy fans, amazing vibes.
