OHMYGOD I loved this movie! (All right not the most sophisticated response but I had to get that out of my system.)
Based on the recent book, The Martian tells the story of an astronaut who is stranded on Mars by his team who believe him dead. Yep, there’s a fabulous cast including Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor, but the real revelation is Matt Damon who has to be all things – funny, sad, determined, despairing, sexy – without engaging with anyone except himself which is no small acting feat. He IS the story and he kills it.
The film is essentially an extended problem-solving exercise. In fact, this movie should be included in required training for corporate problem-solving (I’m a consultant in my day job). Matt, his teammates who are heading back to earth and NASA (the real NASA helped with the details) all work against the clock through one problem after another, science problems at that, which don’t usually translate well to celluloid and yet Director Ridley Scott has us biting our nails the entire time. It was like a giant magic trick where I still can’t figure out where the rabbit was hidden. Mr. Scott, you are a genius; I bow down before you. And this film is finger-lickin’ good.
