If you haven’t read John Niven’s novel, Kill Your Friends, stop what you’re doing and buy it immediately. It’s seriously the best book set in the music industry that I’ve ever read. It tells the story of Steven Stelfox, a drug-fueled alcoholic head of a British label’s A&R department during the height of Britpop. The man isn’t troubled by things such as morals, empathy or the need to do the right thing.
The situations in which he finds himself ring very, very true when it comes to the way the music industry used to be when money and drugs flowed everywhere. So trust me: buy the book. And now, more great news. Kill Your Friends is being made into a movie with John Niven helping out with the script. Judging by the trailers available online, it’s going to be as darkly funny as the book. This I GOTTA see.
