If you’ve ever been to Australia, you’ll know that the Aussies like to have a good time when they go out to see a band. Part of that good time involves drinking. And often it means drinking a lot—and in, um, interesting ways. Maybe too interesting. The Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing in New South Wales has decided enough is enough and are cracking down on what they call “reckless alcohol promotions” at bars—offers they believe can cause real harm to people.
Examples: a martini class filled with the equivalent of eight standard martinis meant to be served to one person. Shots served in a bucket so you can just scoop them out. Cocktails served in plastic bags and milk bottles. And here’s my favourite: a contest where you could win your weight in beer. If this is going on in the crowd, can you imagine what it’s like being up on stage in front of them?
