True or false: Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers was once almost hired by Johnny Lydon, the ex-dude from the Sex Pistols.
True. Back before the Chili Peppers started up, Flea was a member of an L.A. punk band called Fear. Flea had quite the crazy reputation with them. That rep reached the ears of Johnny Lydon, who was busy looking for a replacement for Jah Wobble, the original bass player in his post-Pistols band called Public Image Ltd. When PiL was in L.A., word went out that Johnny was looking for a bass player and Flea came down to audition. When it was over, Johnny told Flea that he had a job–but oddly enough, Flea turned the gig down. Why? He didn’t want to be just a bass player in someone’s band. He wanted to be down front, part of the action. So he told PiL “Thanks but no thanks” and eventually ended up with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
