Arrested Development original aired in 2003. Despite winning Emmy awards and a Golden Globe, in 2006 the show was cancelled after only three seasons. Arrested Development has since developed quite the cult following and fan base. Netflix eventually agreed to sign the show on for an exclusive forth season only available on their streaming service. The much anticipated forth season was released in Spring 2013. Arrested Development season four came just as Netflix was getting big. I know this show was the only reason I decided to subscribe to Netflix in 2013. I had planned to use the free trial, and then run before they took my money. Skip ahead a few years and well, let’s just say my relationship with Netflix is still going strong.
If you’re a fan of shows like The Office or 30 Rock, you might just enjoy Arrest Development. You’ll definitely pick out a few familiar faces. Jason Bateman! Michael Cera! Will Arnett! Jeffrey Tambor! Just to name a few… plus so many guest appearances from other celebs. Don’t be surprised if you see Liza Minnelli and Henry Winkler from time to time. The show follows The Bluth family as they deal with day-to-day antics and attempts to keep their family building development business alive.
I must admit, it did take me a few episodes to really understand who the characters were and what was going on with this show. But you’ll catch on quick, I promise! The best part about Arrested Development is the number of running jokes. Some of the funniest jokes reoccur all the way through from season one until season four. This is a show that’s just as fun to watch again and again. The best part—it was recently announced that season five will be coming to Netflix! Now that fall (aka the best season to cuddle up in front of the TV and binge watch your favourite shows) is around the corner, it’s time to Netflix it up and meet The Bluth family!
If you’re planning to watch for the first time, these are a few of my favourite running jokes to get an idea of what you’re in for… If you’re already a big fan, you’ll get a laugh reminiscing these hilarious moments.
1. Chicken Dance
It seems the entire Bluth family has a habit of breaking out in an embarrassingly hilarious dance whenever they accuse someone of being “chicken”. Gob’s is by far the best.
2. Jean Parmesan
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE. When Private Investigator Jean Parmesan shows up, Lucille Bluth falls for his (not so clever) undercover antics. Every. Single. Time.
3. Say Goodbye to These
There is a lot of flashing that goes on in the Arrested Development world. The Bluth Company’s secretary, Kitty, likes to subject unsolicited flashing to anyone and everyone.
4. Hey Brother
Buster Bluth is best described as the socially awkward brother. He greets everybody by his or her relation to him; “Hey brother” seems to be his favourite. Things get complicated as the family dynamics unfold.
The relationship between Lucille Bluth and her son Buster is a questionable one. He is the ultimate “mama’s boy”.
Tobias. Really, what else can we say? He married into the Bluth Family and is in complete denial of his sexual orientation. He also has a habit of unknowingly making inappropriate sexual references in nearly everything he says.
When one of the Bluth’s is sad, they revert to the head hanging Charlie Brown walk complete with Vince Guaraldi playing in the background.
8. Come On
COME ON! Gob’s favourite way to express frustration/desperation.
I don’t know about you but these clips have totally convinced me to start from Season 1 all over again. Thanks Netflix! Goodbye social life, its been fun.
