Things were pretty rough for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992. In May, guitarist John Frusciante quit in the middle of a tour of Japan, sending the group’s future into chaos. To help clear his head (and his bloodstream of drugs), Anthony Kiedis accompanied a tattoo artist he knew from Amsterdam on an expedition into the heart of Borneo. He thought that roughing it in the jungle might be good for the soul. What he didn’t know that this part of the world has leeches that drop from the trees and suck your blood. After a couple of days, Anthony got really, really uncomfortable. It was Dengue Fever, a not-so-nice tropical disease. It got so bad that Anthony had to be airlifted out by helicopter.
