Take a second to step back in time to 1980. The days of Cabbage Patch Kids, shoulder pads and boom boxes. Although most of us aren’t eager to revisit these trends, an ancient musical gem fresh from the 80’s has recently been uncovered. Resurrected from the year 1980 is a Depeche Mode demo. The three songs (“Ice Machine”, “Radio News” & “Photographic”) were recorded back when Depeche Mode were known as Composition of Sound.
At the time the English band was made up of Vince Clarke, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher. Their sound continued to develop as they became influenced by the electronic music genre. In the summer of 1980, Dave Gahan joined the band and the name Depeche Mode was born. Taken from the cover of a French fashion magazine, “depeche mode” translates into “fashion news’. Their debut album, Speak & Spell was released in 1981.
Today, Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher make-up Depeche Mode. Their most recent album Delta Machine was released in March 2013. Take a listen, it may just inspire you to break out those neon leg warmers.
