If you followed the controversy surrounding Calgary’s Viet Cong over their choice of name, they are far from the first who have been shamed into changing their name. In the late 70s, there was a Toronto punk band who aimed to deliberately shock people with their choice of name: The Battered Wives. This track from their debut album on the Bomb label (mine is on red vinyl) was something of a hit for them. But after much outrage from women’s groups, they eventually relented and became just “The Wives” for the rest of their existence. Fun fact: drummer Cleave Anderson later went on to join Blue Rodeo.
