A Washington DC radio host has possibly cracked the mystery of what the countdown clock on the Foo Fighters website is counting down to. According to Alternative Nation, DJ Mike Jones from DC101 thought the photos that have been appearing behind the clock, as well as the shape of the Foos logo on the page, looked familiar. He realized that they were taken at the Hotel St. Cecilia in Austin, Texas, where Jones and his wife recently spent their honeymoon.
Recalling that the band recently recorded five new songs while in Austin to play a concert, Jones has deduced that when the clock hits zero at midnight on November 22nd, the Foos will announce that those five songs will be released as an EP on Record Store Day Black Friday (November 27th).
According to reports, Dave Grohl told the audience during the band’s set at the Austin City Limits festival in October, “You know what I did last night . . . We recorded five f**king new songs in your beautiful city.”
The band did not premiere any of the new material during its Austin City Limits set, with Grohl saying, “We’re gonna give it to you! But not tonight.” He also remarked that Ben Kweller, who jammed with the band that night, also stopped by to contribute to the recordings.
Grohl has long acknowledged Austin as one of his favorite places, and the city was featured in the first season of the Foos’ HBO series Sonic Highways, which followed the band as it recorded the album in eight different musical hotspots around the U.S.
