Here’s a one-hit-wonder that still won’t die. Ram Jam was around for exactly two albums in 1977 and 1978 which yielded this one single. But what a single. They’ve been able to milk this one for years. And technically, the song is a cover, most often credited to Lead Belly, the African-American blues singer who died in 1949. But we’re not even sure about that because it’s possible that he adapted it from some even earlier material. All songwriting royalties from the song don’t go to Ram Jam but to the estate of Huddie Ledbetter.
