When Lydia Caschera and her daughter Vanessa moved to Texas in 2001 they took with them their Italian roots and love of cooking. During the time they lived in the Lone Star state they quickly exchanged their knowledge for that of the local Tex-Mex culinary scene; fresh ingredients, handmade tortillas, and simple delicious flavours. While Lydia came back to Canada many years before her offspring, they both became passionate about bringing an authentic cuisine to the streets of Toronto.
Queen Street West, in the heart of the shopping and club district, couldn’t be a better location for Mi Taco Taqueria. With its open kitchen, take out counter, fully licensed bar and seating area for 35, guests can place their order to go, dine in or even enjoy a margarita or five after a long day of working/shopping/drinking. A range of tequilas are available and more are in the works.
Pressed fresh each day Lydia prides herself on her special recipe for homemade tortillas which pedestrians can watch being made live from the street side window. And it’s these shells that made the tacos and burritos really stand out.
The menu is simple. You customize want you want. Pick a taco ($3.75), burrito ($8.95) or Bowl (burrito with no tortilla, $8.95). Pick your meat (fish extra), fixings and sauces and salsas. The Taco Plate ($9.95) which includes two tacos comes with a side of smashed beans and Mexican rice. Other sides you can get include the standards chips, salsa and guac or the Elote, a cup layered with sweet corn, crema and queso cheese. Simple and concise.
With plans to have late night hours in the future, party goers will be able to bypass the typical pizza and burrito franchises to get something a little different but totally authentic to curb their late night drunken hunger. And with catering also available nine to fivers can encourage their bosses to change up their quarterly meetings or step out for a quick lunch themselves.
