The day the cabs stood still. The media went nuts. Rightfully so after the crazy display of anger towards the citizens of the city. Remember the cabbie who after bashing on an UberX driver’s window got taken for his first free Uber ride?
People in the media had a RIOT with this footage and other footage of cabbies holding up signs comparing UberX to ISIS. I got a really nice e-mail from a cab driver in Niagara Falls who shared his side of the story and I want to share it because it’s a good look at the issues from his perspective. What do you think? Hi Craig…. Not happy with you. Here’s why.
I am a cab driver in Niagara Falls. I am thoroughly embarrassed by Toronto Cab drivers protest yesterday. But media, like yourself, only tell one side of the story, and shit on cabbies.
Try buying a car, a taxi plate ($160 000 in NF) and insurance ($6000+/yr) for a cab. These are real expenses.
The municipality sets the rates. Cab companies don’t. Flat rating in-city trips is illegal btw. I would lose my license if I was caught doing that….
If it was a level playing field, hey, may the best company win. But the rules will not allow me to compete.
Now… looking at your picture… doesn’t really look like you care… I get it. blah blah blah…. So let me explain it this way.
If I decide to open up a STRIP CLUB and compete here against the Sun Downer I will put a sign on on my front lawn, sell BEER and LAP DANCES out of my house without correct zoning, liquor, or adult entertainer licences and undercut everybody else on the price of beer and lap dances since I have like zero expenses? Sound crazy? That’s what Uber has done in my industry. And the general public likes the cheap beer and cheap girls and keep coming back for more.
Honestly…. cabbies have been jumping up and down since 2012 on this. We have. No body gives a shit though because they just want cheap been and lap dances. While I was embarrassed yesterday… thats what we have to do to get any attention.
Closing thoughts…. call up your ins. company and tell them you are considering driving for Uber… ask if that is cool… see what they say. I dare you. No joke. Uber drivers are not insured.
Parent company Uber claims they are insured. LOL… Hope you read the terms the conditions when you down loaded the app. Do you know what they will cap your liability at in those terms? I do.
I’m in Falls here man… What am I supposed to do? You and the public seem to feel i’m over charging you and have a hate-on for me. I’m just trying to follow the rules and make a living though. And a company has come in that disregards the rules and is undercutting me. I’m not allowed to compete against them. What the fuck am I supposed to do?
Driver, NF Taxi.
