It’s that time of year. Christmas music is overtaking the airwaves. Every store, coffee shop and basically public establishment you visit this December will be playing tunes about fat men eating cookies, thrilling sleigh rides and the polar vortex. And I’m all for it. There’s something about the novelty that comes with music that you listen to only once a year. It’s all fine and dandy but just wait, by mid-December Bing and Frank need a serious break. There are only so many holiday classics I can handle. And at the same time, there are gifts to be bought, parties to attend and eggnog to drink. I want to be festive!! I want Christmas music! Fear not, I have found a solution. Here is a list of some unusual holiday tunes to help you switch things up this December.
Blink 182- I Won’t Be Home for Christmas
This has to be on of all time my favourite Christmas tunes. Here’s to Blink 182, gving voice to those secret little thoughts we all have.
“It’s Christmas time again, It’s time to be nice to the people you can’t stand all year
I’m growing tired of all this Christmas cheer, You people scare me”
Pearl Jam – Let Me Sleep (It’s Christmas Time)
Pearl Jam captures the essence of the magic of Christmas that seems to get lost in adulthood. Let’s face it, Christmas isn’t the same as when we were kids and sometimes we just need a nap!
Pearl Jam – Santa God
Again, Pearl Jam reminisces back to childhood and remembers the days where Santa Claus was basically god. SANTA, I KNOW HIM!
The Killers – Don’t Shoot Me Santa
Leave it to the Killers to take it a little too far.. We’ve all heard of Santa leaving coal for the naughty kids. Well, the killers must have been on the top of naughty list because they’re concerned santa may show up with a loaded gun.
The Vandals – My First Christmas As a Woman
The Vandals definitely has the diversity thing covered with the whole sex change theme, but its possible the lyrics will make you cringe (and laugh hysterically). Warning, this one may not go over so well at the family dinner.
“A doctor reconstructed my genitals, And now I’m waiting underneath the mistletoe, for a guy who could love a girl like me.”
Rancid – Xmas Eve (She got up and left me)
This is classic Rancid. Feeling broken hearted this Christmas? Throw this punk rock Christmas carol into the mix, pour yourself a glass of spiked eggnog and you’ll be dashing through the snow in no time.
LCD Soundsystem – Oh You (Christmas Blues)
Okay, so the punk rock and eggnog didn’t do it? It’s true, being broken hearted at Christmas may be one of the worst things. But maybe LCD Sounstystem’s bluesy “Oh You (Christmas Blues) will help ease the pain.
My Chemical Romance – Every Snowflake is Different (just like you)
This one tops the list. You haven’t seen weird until you’ve watched this video.
