One of the most popular alt-rock-related Christmas items this year will probably be Kurt Cobain’s “solo album.” But it’s not really a solo album in the traditional sense. It consists of 31 tracks salvaged from various cassettes found in a storage locker. Courtney moved everything out of the house after Kurt died because so many of his “friends” were picking through his stuff and stealing it. When director Brett Morgen started on the documentary that would become Montage of Heck, he was given access to that storage locker. In it, he found a bunch of cassettes filled with acoustic tracks, demos and song fragments. One of those tapes was labeled “Montage of Heck,” hence the name of the movie. By all means buy the album. In fact, I’d get the box set which delivers a lot of value. But as for there being anything left in the vaults for future releases? Nope. We’ve hit the bottom of the barrel. Time to move on.
