AWOLNATION, “Woman Woman”
Run (Red Bull)
As Run heads towards its first birthday—it came out March 17, 2015—Aaron Bruno and crew have picked a third single from the album just as they’re about to head out on an American tour with Fall Out Boy. If you’re okay with the previous two singles, you’ll do fine with this one, too.
Jack Garratt, “Worry”
Buckinghamshire-raised singer-songwriter Jack Garratt began setting the stage for the release of this debut album back in 2014 with a single entitled “The Love You’ve Forgiven,” which was followed by two more standalone singles last year. “Worry,” Jack’s fourth single, will appear with the other three when Phase finally gets released on February 19.
Waking Up the Giants (Virgin)
Grizfolk began when Swedish producers Fredrik Eriksson and Sebastian Fritze ran into an LA-based singer-songwriter named Adam Roth in 2012. Two more local guys, Brendan Willing James and Bill Delia, joined up and the band—then known as Griz Adams—started playing around SoCal. After a couple of performances went viral with music taken from some indie EPs—and after they changed their name to Grizfolk—they were scooped up by Virgin. Their debut album is out this month.
Royal Foundry, “Running Away”
Single (Royal Foundry)
Here’s yet another husband-and-wife team, this time from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Bethany and Jared Salte have been working on an uptempo sort of pop folk that has already taken them to places like Belize and Israel. Good stuff if you’re into Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men and maybe even Arcade Fire.
Reuben and the Dark, “Heart In Two”
Single (Arts & Crafts)
This five piece Calgary band led by Reuben Bullock (and featuring his brother, Distance. Yes, that’s his name) had their first album produced by associates of Florence + the Machine, Madonna, Nicki Minaj and Kanye. Everyone in the group plays different instruments, which makes for some interesting combinations in the same way we see with Mumford and Sons and Arcade Fire. They’re touring with Vance Joy.
