I interviewed Matt Bellamy from Muse on Saturday, we talked about the new record ‘Drones’, his original vision of what success for the band was, the bands ever evolving sound, his genuine love of Toronto, The Mod Club and yes even curling! Let me quickly set the scene if I may because it was….. surreal.
It’s Saturday Jan 16th 2016, I’m scheduled to interview Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy just hours before he plays his bands latest sold out stadium show, this time at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. I show up at the venue where I am greeted by band management and told Matt is still at the hotel; if it if alright with me we can fire over and do the interview there. Interview venue making little to no difference to me I agree and we’re off, arriving a short time later at one of the finest hotels our great city has to offer, I’m shown into an empty hotel room where I wait, chatting casually with members of the bands hilarious and charming management staff while enjoying the magnificent top floor views. A call comes in, manager 1 removes herself from the room before quickly popping her head back in to ask ‘Adam, are you filming or taking any pictures?’,
‘I’m not, just audio.’ I reply,
Seconds later Matt Bellamy one of the biggest rock stars on the planet, front-man of one of the biggest bands in the world explodes through the door, hair wet, smile beaming from his face and wearing only a fluffy white hotel robe. After some brief hugs for managers he’s reconnecting with after what has already been a hectic tour the room is clear and I find myself sitting in a hotel room, alone with Matt Bellamy… in a robe.
“Sorry friend, didn’t mean to keep you waiting I was having a steam.” he say.
“Not a problem” I reply laughing.
“The robes pretty casual but I figured you’re not filming, so who cares what I’m wearing.”
We both laugh and the interview begins..
He couldn’t have been a cooler more humble or engaging person. I enjoyed every second of chatting with him and could tell he truly enjoys and appreciates the position he’s in and the love he receives from fans around the world. I was already a Muse fan ahead of the interview and now even more-so.
