An exciting new song will almost always send listeners scrambling to the internet or various apps in search of more music from the respective artist/band’s catalogue. So what happens when a potential new fan looks for more but doesn’t turn up very much? A perfect example would be Alessia Cara who debuted an exciting new song during 2015 and caught a lot of attention. While her single ‘Here’ was catching fire back in April of 2015 a quick search online did not bring many additional recordings that could help a new listener determine if her much-anticipated first album would be worth the eventual download (it is by the way).
Since music lovers come in all varieties there are bound to be those who will make a note to self to check back with a newly discovered artist for music releases or follow an artist on social media in hopes of news – basically giving an artist or band the chance to record more before moving on to the next hit of the day. However, there are just as many who will forget a newly discovered artist if they can’t purchase an album immediately and sometimes these listeners do move on. The former makes sense, why not follow a new band and periodically check in to see what projects they are working on – given the ease afforded by social media and music apps. Over the course of 2016 there are many bands we hope to hear more from and so we should be following them for updates.
To kick off your watch list here are 5 excellent bands to follow in 2016, some who are actively working on new projects and others who we hope will start recording again soon!
1. Saint Motel
Dream Pop/Nu Disco is strong with this American group. Over the past few years new singles have been released (usually accompanied by a highly entertaining music video). The most notable release is the 2014 track ‘My Type’ – by itself this song is enough to warrant following this band.
2. Cold War Kids
With five studio albums the west coast rock of Cold War Kids is not in short supply. During 2015 the band’s addictive single ‘First’ from the 2014 release Hold My Home likely hooked a few new listeners who may want to follow the band for upcoming releases.
3. July Talk
When Toronto’s July Talk released their self-titled debut album in 2012, the single ‘Guns + Ammunition’ fast became a radio hit across the nation. The band has not released anything new since the deluxe edition of their first album in 2014 which included three additional songs. More music from July Talk should be on the menu anytime now.
4. The Strumbellas
Another Toronto band, The Strumbellas have released two albums to date with a sound that has been described as “folk popgrass” and “alternative country”. Acclaim follows wherever they go with multiple Juno nominations and a win to their credit. 2015 saw the release of ‘Spirits’ – an infectious track that has definitely landed them on a lot of must watch lists.
5. Twenty One Pilots
Four albums in and Ohio’s electropop/alt-hip hop duo Twenty One Pilots have finally started to get the attention they deserve. Blurryface was released in May of 2015 and the singles ‘Tear In My Heart’ and ‘Stressed Out’ caught on with listeners – definitely an act to follow in 2016.
