Here are the 5 songs you need to hear this week.
Jack Garratt, “Worry”
RIYL: Coleman Hell, Flying Lotus, a touch of Hozier
Ex-school teacher wannabe from Buckinghamshire, England, who started playing music at 12 and then turned into something really precocious when he was given his first laptop. Since 2014 he’s been releasing a steady run of singles in preparation for this month’s release of Phase. Last year, he was the winner of BBC’s Sound of 2015 poll. Maybe they were just a year late.
Outcast EP (300 Entertainment)
RIYL: Jimmy Eat World, Cage The Elephant, Atlas Genius
Hooky indie four-piece from Brooklyn who have been dropping the occasional EP since 2013. Alternatively punky, poppy and New Wave-y, a full album is due early this year.
Declan McKenna, “Brazil”
RIYL: Billy Bragg, Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, Tom Vek
Last year at age 16, he won £5,000 in the Glastonbury Emerging Artist Awards, igniting a bidding war among agents (at least a dozen) and record labels (somewhere north of 40). If you listen closely to this single from the summer of 2015, it slams FIFA and their bone-headed approach to staging the World Cup in that country. From that point on, sports commentators started seeking out the wisdom of a 16 year-old high schooler. Watch this kid.
Iggy Pop and Josh Homme, “Fever”
Post Pop Depression (Loma Vista)
RIYL: Pretty much a cross between Iggy Pop and Queens of the Stone Age. What else did you expect?
Let’s be clear: this is an Iggy Pop album, although he does get plenty of help from some liked-minded (and, er younger) friends such as Josh, Dean Fertita from the QotSA and Dead Weather along with Matt Helders from the Arctic Monkeys. There’s a 20-day tour coming. How can you not be curious?
Operators, “Cold Light”
Blue Wave (Last Gang Records)
RIYL: Late period New Order (it’s all in the bassline), Killers, Interpol
If the name Dan Boeckner sounds familiar, it’s because he’s been associated with Handsome Furs, Wolf Parade and Divine Fits over the last decade or so. Very 80s New Wave-ish and highly danceable.
