Why Technics decided to stop production of their iconic SL-1200 turntable about five years ago was something of a mystery. DJs and hi-fi aficionados worldwide were bereft. Since its introduction in 1972, its reputation as a tough and reliable turntable—one that gave birth to scratching, sample and thus indirectly rap and hip hop—made it a favourite of millions.
Although to be fair, the vinyl resurrection was still in its early years when the decision was made to shut it all down. But now Technics has seen the light and the SL-1200 is coming back with very little in the way of changes from the original.
Sure, there are a few modern flourishes, but nothing to detract from the stuff that made the thing what it was. Watch for new units later this year. And if you’ve got extra money, there’s a special edition version coming in a lot of just 1,200 units.
