Being hopeful about the Leafs. I don’t wanna rag on Phaneuf here, because he never really had a fair shake in Toronto. For the amount of ice time he had each night it’s no wonder mistakes were made. The guy was basically alone out there. And all anyone ever did was compare him to the level of play he was at in Calgary. But that team was a completely different animal. So it was an unfair comparison.
You can be the best formula one driver on the planet if you’re behind the wheel of a 1987 hatchback you’re not gonna win any races.
But Phaneuf leaving is a good sign, not right now, cause you can say what you want, that guy was huge in the dressing room and really well liked by the rest of the team. So that leadership and the time he ate on the ice will be missed. But it shows that this team is committed to two years down the line. Three years, even four or five. They’re building something, and in two years they’re gonna have another ten million dollars of wiggle room under the cap and that is gonna be huge in terms of putting together a legacy team.
It’s easy to get cynical with The Leafs. It is. But Babcock said he was gonna build us a championship team, and big moves are what makes that happen. 9 players. That’s a big move.
So forgive me some hope here. I’m just pumped that maybe my kids will grow up in this town when The Leafs are putting a dynasty together.
