From the beginning, the core of the Clash was Joe Strummer, Mick Jones and Paul Simonen. Where they had trouble was with drummers.
There were two drummers in the Clash: Terry Chimes and Topper Headon. Topper was the one who was considered to be part of the “classic Clash” lineup. But he was fired for all kinds of drugs and alcohol issues at the height of the Clash’s success. He admitted that he was out of control: “I remember being sick on Buddy Holly’s grave, which didn’t go down too well.” Yeah, well, Joe Strummer kicked him out of the band.
The good news is that after a period in the wilderness, Topper cleaned up and is healthy today.
